Gemma Saville
The structure resembles a table at first. The scale suggests
a giant’s table, but quickly confounds this naïve assumption.
Presented with this imagined or inhibited space, meaning is never
fixed as the objects and images slip between one comprehension and
another, the works are in constant flux. The compositions and forms
slide between the volume associated with three dimensional works
and the linear quality of the drawn line. Objects are devoid of history
yet retain a composure, questioning the desire for possession of
a reference, a stable point. Solidity comes through different means.
Propped, leant and stacked, forms have become artefacts, with the
sense of being left with a purpose, a rightness of place. Structures
function both as integral supports and as constituent parts of the
overall composition. Bare materials usually consigned to a supporting
role are manipulated by their colour, weight and visceral language.
Interior décor could never be this tasteful.
